Archaeobiology Collection Management
Project Description: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History offers a candidate the opportunity to help process the faunal material housed within the Department of Anthropology. The intern will work with collections management staff to make objects more accessible to researchers. They will perform a variety of tasks including inventorying, labeling, and photographing Archaeobiology collections. This internship involves enhancing catalog records and rehousing.
Qualifications: Applicants should be current students or recent graduates from museum studies, anthropology, zoology, or related fields who want to gain hands-on collections management experience. This position requires attention to details and good organization skills. Applicants will receive on-the-job training and gain experience that can be used across multiple disciplines.
Learning Objectives: The intern will gain valuable experience in collections management techniques including object handling, inventorying, rehousing, and moving museum collections. The intern will use archival materials to preserve objects and their associated information. Learning basic zoology nomenclature and taxonomy is an added benefit to this internship. They can also attend staff meetings and scholarly lectures allowing them to meet with and learn from other museum professionals.
Timetable: This opportunity is available throughout the year but requires a minimum 100 hour commitment. Flexible start and end dates.
This internship is part-time with variable work hours but must take place between 9:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday.

This internship may be completed for course credit.
Location: The Archaeobiology Collection is located in the Smithsonian’s Museum Support Center in Suitland, MD. The center is accessible from the Suitland Metro Station on the Green Line or by free shuttle from the National Mall. Free parking is also available at the Museum Support Center.
