Stepping up to the Challenge

154 million artifacts, 30.1 million visitors in 2017, 19 museums, the National Zoo, and 9 research centers. Basically, the Smithsonian is huge. Combine the sheer size of the Smithsonian with the time consuming daily tasks of an internship, plus the sweat-inducing infamous D.C. humidity, and its a wonder how anyone could ever see all of the amazing museums the Smithsonian has to offer. But Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) intern, Hayley Kellner, did just that.

The Smithsonian Intern Challenge is a task designed for Smithsonian interns, encouraging them to visit all of the Smithsonian museums around the Washington, D.C. area! The goal of this challenge is to expose interns to the different museums and galleries that the Smithsonian has to offer, and to get them away from their desk or laboratory!

Over the course of her summer here in D.C., Hayley managed to visit all 16 Smithsonian museums and galleries in the D.C. area. Along the way, Hayley had to take pictures of each stop in order to prove that she was there! Check out all of her awesome pictures here.

Think you can take on the challenge yourself? Post your pictures with the #smithsonianinternchallenge. Congratulations, Hayley, what an awesome way to spend your free-time this summer!
