Contagious Commuters

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Research Associate Dr. Jose Loaiza tracks the movement of mosquitoes in Panama in order to determine the risk of diseases, such as dengue fever and chikungunya. As a part of his research, Loaiza has discovered that mosquitoes migrate long distances along Panama’s highways by using the water in discarded tires to breed.

The Smithsonian Insider recently published a video on Loaiza’s research. You can check out the video here.
