I2F Interns Vicky Chan and Natali Chavez staff a booth at the 2018 Zoo Fiesta

During this year’s Zoo Fiesta, two current I2F interns Vicky Chan and Natali Chavez participated in the annual outreach event. They explained to children and families about the Channel Island Fox and the Island Spotted Skunk, both of which were the focuses of a monitoring project conducted by the UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars. Vicky currently interns with Family Programs at the National Museum of Natural History and Natali has returned to the National Zoo to work in the genetics lab.

Both interns are Alumni of the UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars Program, which introduces undergraduate participants to scientific research and conservation work. Now as graduates, they continue to participate in outreach events and spark scientific interest in the next generation.
